Nacido con el nombre de John Allen Hendrix, su padre le cambió el nombre por James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix. Le compró una guitarra acústica de segunda mano, con la que el pequeño James aprendió a tocar a los 11 años de edad. En 1959, le compró la primera guitarra eléctrica.
Comenzó a actuar en público en 1962 con el grupo King Casuals. Tuvo relativo éxito, y fue contratado por Little Richard, hasta 1965. A partir de ese año, formó su propia banda llamada Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, con la que se sucederían los éxitos y el trabajo sin descanso, explotado por sus representantes musicales. Poco después, comenzó a consumir marihuana y LSD. Como la gran mayoría de músicos y artistas de la época.
Chas Chandler, el bajista del grupo "The Animals", se convirtió en su representante y le convenció en 1966 para ir a Londres, donde había entonces un gran movimiento musical. Juntos crearon el grupo The Jimi Hendrix Experience, con Mitch Mitchell a la batería y el recientemente fallecido Noel Redding al bajo eléctrico.
Realizó una actuación estelar (quema de guitarra incluida) en 1967, en el Festival Pop de Monterey. También actuó, en diversos Festivales durante 1969, en el de Newport y en el "Woodstock Music & Art Fair", en donde tocó una histórica versión eléctrica del himno estadounidense.
En 1969 se disolvió "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" y montó un nuevo grupo llamado "Band Of Gypsys" ("Banda de Gitanos") con Buddy Miles en batería y Billy Cox en bajo.
Protagonizó el histórico concierto del Festival de la Isla de Wight en 1970. Mermado ya de fuerzas por la gira "Cry of Love", debido a un "estresante ritmo de trabajo" mezcla de la vorágine creativa y la compleja transición hacia un bluesrock más sofisticado. A destacar también los recitales de Atlanta y Berkeley.
En 1970 estaba grabando su cuarto álbum, "First Rays of The New Rising Sun" en Londres. Se planeaba un álbum doble (por la gran cantidad de canciones, tomas y demos). Pero en la madrugada del 18 de septiembre de 1970, Jimi Hendrix ingirió una mezcla de somníferos y alcohol y murió al parecer por aspiración de vómito. Años después luego de investigaciones se supo que en realidad, el músico no había muerto en el momento y con su porpio jugo gástrico si no que en realidad cuando lo llevaban en la camilla John Allen quería tirar la cabeza para poder devover en el piso y el camillero como co su cabeza fuera de la camilla asi casusando su atragantamiento y fallecimiento. De todos modos las versiones que existen de su muerte son variadas y ninguna es certera. Los medios de comunicación empezaron a difundir entonces el bulo de que otra estrella del rock había muerto por culpa de las drogas duras: "Sexo, drogas y rock & roll". Sensacionalismo de la época. Fue un fatal y terrible accidente.
El legado musical de Hendrix es revolucionario, sin llegar a pensar que fue el único y el primero en todo lo que hizo, "sino más bien en cómo lo hizo", sobre todo a la hora conjugar y mezclar diversos elementos ya establecidos. La pregunta es hacia donde hubiera evolucionado su música.

This is a numbered, limited edition - only 2000 copies world-wide.
The more than 6 hours of live music assembled here gives Hendrix fans the first opportunity to compare The Experience's live performances 2-performances per night 3-day recorded during the band's temporary residence at San Francisco's Winterland arena.
Given that these recordings have been assembled from a variety of different sources, the sound quality (with the exception of the last 3 tracks on Disc 3, which, as the soundboard tape mysteriously stopped running, have been taken from a less-than perfect audience recording) is excellent, and as usual, Jimi's virtuoso delivery is as varied and unpredictable as ever, as are the technical problems which were invariably the sub-text of the majority of Hendrix concerts.

COMENTARIOS DE TAXBLUESMAN....
Disco fabuloso donde oiremos versiones ineditas y otras ya oidas pero tal como sonaron y se grabaron ... un sonido cuasi perfecto de HENDRIX en la guitarra ... esta nueva version de EZY RIDER fantastica sumamente un GRAN JAM DE 20.01 minutos y uno que otro tema sin acabar altamente recomendado... fabulosol....
